Slowing Down With Saint Paloma: TWINHAUS

Slowing Down With Saint Paloma: TWINHAUS

Tucked into the heart of Oklahoma City’s Plaza District, a new kind of vintage store is rewriting the rules of secondhand style. Siblings-turned-style-curators have opened the doors to a space that feels less like a shop and more like a living gallery—where designer vintage meets avant-garde art and every corner is a study in visual storytelling. Blurring the lines between fashion and installation, their boutique isn’t just a place to shop—it’s an immersive experience that Oklahoma City hasn’t seen before, and one that’s redefining what it means to collect, wear, and live with clothing as art. They are Justice Smithers and Amber Black and together they created TWINHAUS.

HOW DID GET STARTED IN VINTAGE / WHATS YOUR BACKGROUND?

Justice - I went to school for photography, but we were always being dragged to thrift stores growing up, so that was inherently part of our upbringing. I’ve also worked/managed a local thrift store just outside of Oklahoma City for over 15 years.

Amber - same. School for art. We worked at the same thrift store for a few years which is where we had our first curated vintage rack. And our grandmother took us thrifting. She didn’t love the thrift store but she loved to find the “special” item in the rough which is something she passed onto us.

DAILY UNIFORM?

Justice - I always gravitate towards a trouser, some type of cotton button down, a chunky boot, and my 90s YSL canvas tote.  Almost always black… Anything black. Finish it off with a pair of Jacques Marie Mage glasses.

Amber- My day job is installation art so daily uniform is a black jumpsuit, black work boot or clog, big basket full of supplies. On a shop day or weekend I have a bit more fun. Almost always something vintage in the mix. Also lots of black or jewel tones.

HOW HAVE YOU SUCCESSFULLY BLENDED THE WORKDS OF ART AND VINTAGE FASHION IN YOUR SPACE?

Justice- Dressing is just another form of artistic expression so in our view it’s impossible to separate the two. Both of our backgrounds are in art so it felt natural to incorporate those elements into the store. We want TWINHUAS to be immersive and a catalyst for self expression in the way you dress, and as an extension of that, hopefully bring art into your day to day life. For us the physical environment around us matters and affects our emotional well being. Also, it’s just fun to have cool shit around while you’re shopping for cute clothes.

Amber- I think we find curating and personalizing our environments as almost compulsory and clothing is just a part of that. Finding beauty in things and places is a form of romanticizing our own existences. Maybe finding or saving old or forgotten things and presenting them in their specialness scratches that itch in a different way. Presentation is important and also an art all its own. We hope that people feel or see that in what we do.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY LISTENING TO OR READING?

Justice - I’ve been in a Kate Bush mood lately, but haven’t we all? I also just finished reading Sociopath: A Memoir by Patric Gagne.

Amber- Yeah, always just a sad girl. A lot of Mazzy Star; Stevie Knicks; Bjork. I am re reading the Hilma Af Klint biography by Julia Voss.

AMBER YOU'RE A FIBER ARTISTS..ANY PLANS TO INCORPORATE MORE ART INTO TWINHAUS IN THE FUTURE?

Amber - Yes! The current twinhaus dressing room is a fiber art installation. We hope to have that rotate and to also do more temporary things using repurposed or sustainable materials. We just personally enjoy the surprise of that within a vintage retail space but also hope other people enjoy the emersion and engagement it brings to their shopping experience.

WHERE DO YOU SEE TWINHAUS IN 5 YEARS?

Justice - Hopefully in 5 years we will have expanded and continue to grow, not only as a storefront and business, but what we offer and bring to the table for fashion in Oklahoma. We’re trying to bring a different point of view to the vintage scene in the Oklahoma City area and hopefully everyone continues to respond to and see our vision.

Amber- Ditto
