Gabrielle Smoyer of Cowtail Vintage : desert dweller, community builder and badass

Describe your style in 3 words?

"Functional, Comfortable, Muted " -

My friend Brandon said - “A working-class Appalachian grandpa”

Fav song or album on repeat?

I’ve been listening to the song “Once then we’ll be free” by the band Wisp on repeat lately. There’s a great playlist on Spotify called IRL ANGEL, highly recommend!

Who/what inspires you?

Other fem resellers and openly queer people in vintage. Seeing my friends and people I know succeed. I get high off helping people and watching them win.

How/when were you first introduced into vintage?

"While I was growing up, my mom kept a drawer under lock and key full of vintage from shows that she had gone to when she was teenager, bands like the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. I was obsessed with them. lNot sure what ever happened to them. "

Hobbies? Things you want to do?

"I’m pretty notorious for having a new hobby every year, although reselling and being involved with the vintage community has really stuck.

Im really lucky in that lately I’ve been able to spend time with an intimate group of people who have a small camera/photo club. Everyone takes the time to teach and go over concepts in photography.  It’s something that I’ve been wanting to pursue for a long time, but I never felt like I could just pick up a camera and go. I learn better when I can be guided and ask questions. Don’t we all?"

What’s exciting you right now?

"How much time do we have? I could go on forever about what’s exciting me right now.

I recently established an all vintage clothes market called Desert Haze Market in Tucson, AZ where I live. It happens monthly and it’s something I’ve put my whole heart and all of my energy into lately. I wanted to create a space for everyone to be together. The intent is that we help each other, you get to know the person next to you, and share ideas, etc. Also, wanted to bring a bigger vintage clothes shopping event to Tucson. It really didn’t exist. There’s tons of markets and fleas but no where, where you can exclusively shop all vintage clothes. There was a void that needed to be filled. It’s going swell and it feels well received. People are really showing up and there’s a lot of excitement that builds between events. I’m really grateful for everyone that has supported me throughout the process of making it possible. "

Heart goals?

"I want to open a co-operative space store in Tucson for vintage clothes. Hopefully 2024 is the year I can put the plans into motion.

I was in Salt Lake City recently and was really inspired by a spot called Sum Ol’ Store. It’s like 20 resellers all together one spot. There’s so much great stuff in there. I just couldn’t imagine opening my own store - I would want to bring everyone along with me. If you’re in SLC I would definitely recommend checking it out. "

Favorite piece of vintage you own?

That’s a really hard question. I think right now it’s my WWII hbt mechanic coveralls. They just fit in the right places and they’ve honestly been super comfortable even when the weather is warm. I love the belted waist. The pockets are great.
